Welcome to Macworld's monthly Interactive CD-ROM.  We have long wanted to compile the great tips and tricks featured monthly in Macworld's Create articles, and this month we do just that, focusing on graphics articles. So look at our main feature "Graphics Compendium" for step-by-step hints on how to make your graphic images even better.

While we don't generally subscribe to paranoid notions, there is enough buzz about Internet attacks out there to make us, and probably you, concerned—especially those of you who are on cable modems or DSL lines. Our bonus feature this month "Protect Your Mac" features several Mac applications to help you create a firewall between your Mac and the Internet. Some of these firewalls also include routing and DHCP services that will let you share your Internet connection across a local area network of computers—Macs and PCs.

  5. Reviews this month brings demos and info about ACI Us's 4th Dimension database application, MixMan Studio, ArtMatic, the ImagePort Xtension for Quark, and a variety of others. Our favorite, of course, is Quake III Arena. Who says we have to grow up?

  69. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT DEMOS & SOFTWARE:
  70. Software provided on this CD-ROM has been compressed. All software must be
  71. uncompressed and installed onto your hard drive. If you are unable to play
  72. game demos or go online, or if movies play back poorly, you may be short of
  73. memory.  Quit other applications to free up more RAM and continue.

  75. Trouble-shooting & Memory problems:
  76.  
  77. If this CD interface fails to launch, there are several things you can do
  78. to remedy the problem:
  79.  
  80. 1)  Turn on the Virtual Memory using the Memory Control Panel and set your
  81. total memory to at least 16MB.  If you are using MacOS 7.5.5 or later this
  82. is the recommended solution.
  83.  
  84. 2)  To change memory allocation for a program, click once on the program's
  85. icon to select it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and set the
  86. Preferred Size to the desired amount.
  87.  
  88. 3)  Make sure you have enough memory to open the application you wish to
  89. run. To check your available memory use the "About this Computer..." menu
  90. option under the Apple menu while in the Finder.
  91.  
  92. 4) Quit any applications you are not current using in order to free up
  93. memory for the software on the CD-ROM.
  94.  
  95. Minimum System Requirements:
  96.  
  97. 1)  Mac OS compatible computer (with a Motorola Power PC Processor).
  98. 2)  System 7.5.3 or newer.
  99. 3) 14 inch color monitor with the capability of displaying 256 or more
  100. colors at a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels.
  101. 4)  Double speed (2X) CD-ROM drive.
  102. 5)  QuickTime (QuickTime 3, Sound Manager 3.2).
  103. 6) 12 MB of free RAM.  At least 24 MB of physical RAM is recommended.  To
  104. see how much available RAM your computer has, choose "About this Macintosh"
  105. from the Apple Menu.

  115. RETURN THE UNUSED CD FOR A FULL REFUND OF MONIES PAID, IF ANY.

  118. programs  and  associated  documentation,  utilities and other software
  119. and associated documentation, and other materials included on this CD and
  120. their compilation (collectively, the "Collection") are licensed to you
  121. subject  to the  terms and conditions of this Agreement by Mac Publishing
  122. LLC, having  a place  of  business  at  301  Howard  Street, San Francisco,
  123. CA 94105  ("Mac Publishing").  In addition to being governed by the terms
  124. and conditions of this  Agreement,  your  rights  to use the software
  125. programs and associated documentation are governed by the agreements for
  126. each such software program that  are set forth in and that shall be
  127. displayed by the operation of such programs (the "Software Agreements").
  128. Your rights to use other programs and materials  included  on the CD are
  129. also governed by any separate agreements distributed  with  those  programs
  130. and  materials  on  the  CD (the "Other Agreements").  In the event of any
  131. inconsistency between this Agreement and any  of  the  Software  Agreements
  132. or the Other Agreements, this Agreement shall govern. By using the
  133. Collection, in whole or in part, you agree to  be bound  by  the  terms and
  134. conditions of this Agreement. Mac Publishing
  135. Owns the  title  to  the  Collection  and  to  all  intellectual property
  136. rights therein,  except  insofar  as it contains materials that are
  137. proprietary to third-party  suppliers. All rights in the Collection except
  138. those expressly granted  to  you  in this Agreement are reserved to Mac
  139. Publishing and  such suppliers as their respective interests may appear.

  141. 1. LIMITED LICENSE.
  142.        Mac Publishing grants you a limited, nonexclusive, nontransferable
  143. license to use the Collection on a single dedicated computer (excluding
  144. network servers). This Agreement and your rights hereunder shall
  145. automatically terminate if you fail to comply with any provision of this
  146. Agreement or any of the Software Agreements or the Other Agreements. Upon
  147. such termination, you agree to destroy the CD and all copies of the CD,
  148. whether lawful or not, that are in your possession or under your control.
  149.  
  150. 2. ADDITIONAL RESTRICTIONS.
  151.        A. You shall not (and shall not permit other persons or entities to)
  152. directly or indirectly, by electronic or other means, reproduce (except for
  153. archival purposes as permitted by law), publish, distribute, copy, rent,
  154. lease, sell, sublicense, assign, or otherwise transfer the Collection or
  155. any part thereof or this Agreement. Any attempt to do so shall be void and
  156. of no effect.
  157.        B. You shall not (and shall not permit other persons or entities to)
  158. use the Collection or any part thereof for any commercial purpose or
  159. reverse-engineer, decompile, disassemble, merge, modify, create derivative
  160. works of, or translate the Collection.
  161.        C. You shall not (and shall not permit other persons or entities to)
  162. remove or obscure Mac Publishing's or its suppliers' copyright, trademark,
  163. or other proprietary notices or legends from any portion of the Collection
  164. or any related materials.
  165.        D. You agree and certify that the Collection will not be exported
  166. outside the United States except as authorized and as permitted by the laws
  167. and regulations of the United States. If the Collection has been rightfully
  168. obtained outside of the United States, you agree that you will not reexport
  169. the Collection, except as permitted by the laws and regulations of the
  170. United States and the laws and regulations of the jurisdiction in which you
  171. obtained the Collection.

  173. 3. DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTY.
  174.        A. THE COLLECTION AND CD ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY
  175. KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY WARRANTY
  176. OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. THE ENTIRE RISK AS
  177. TO THE RESULTS AND PERFORMANCE OF THE CD, THE COLLECTION, AND OTHER
  178. MATERIAL THAT IS PART OF THE COLLECTION IS ASSUMED BY YOU.  MAC PUBLISHING
  179. AND ITS SUPPLIERS ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR DEFECTS IN THE CD OR THE
  180. ACCURACY OR APPLICATION OF OR ERRORS OR OMISSIONS IN THE CD OR THE
  181. COLLECTION.  Mac Publishing AND ITS SUPPLIERS DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE
  182. FUNCTIONS CONTAINED IN THE COLLECTION WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS, OR THAT

  185. CORRECTED. IN NO EVENT SHALL MAC PUBLISHING OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR
  186. ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES
  187. ARISING OUT OF THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE CD OR THE COLLECTION,
  188. EVEN IF MAC PUBLISHING OR ITS SUPPLIERS HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE LIKELIHOOD
  189. OF SUCH DAMAGES OCCURRING.  MAC PUBLISHING AND ITS SUPPLIERS SHALL NOT BE
  190. LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS, DAMAGES, OR COSTS ARISING OUT OF BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
  191. LOST PROFITS OR REVENUE; LOSS OF USE OF THE CD OR THE COLLECTION; LOSS OF
  192. DATA OR EQUIPMENT; COST OF RECOVERING SOFTWARE, DATA, OR MATERIALS IN THE
  193. COLLECTION; THE COST OF SUBSTITUTE SOFTWARE, DATA, OR MATERIALS IN THE
  194. COLLECTION; CLAIMS BY THIRD PARTIES; OR OTHER SIMILAR COSTS. Some states do
  195. not allow exclusion or limitation of implied warranties or limitation of
  196. liability for incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations
  197. exclusions may not apply to you.
  198.        B. IN NO EVENT SHALL MAC PUBLISHING'S OR ITS SUPPLIERS' TOTAL
  199. LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ALL DAMAGES, LOSSES, AND CAUSES OF ACTION (WHETHER IN
  200. CONTRACT, TORT, OR OTHERWISE) EXCEED THE AMOUNT PAID BY YOU FOR THE
  201. COLLECTION.

  203. 4. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS.
  204.        The Collection is licensed subject to RESTRICTED RIGHTS. Use,
  205. duplication, or disclosure by the U.S. Government or any person or entity
  206. acting on its behalf is subject to restrictions as set forth in subdivision
  207. (c)(1)(ii) of the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software Clause at
  208. DFARS (48 CFR 252.227-7013) for DoD contracts, in paragraphs (c)(1) and (2)
  209. of the Commercial Computer Software Restricted Rights clause in the FAR
  210. (48CFR 52.227-19) for civilian agencies, or, in the case of NASA, in clause
  211. 18-52.227-86(d) of the NASA Supplement to the FAR, or in other comparable

  215. 5. GENERAL PROVISIONS.
  216.        Nothing in this Agreement constitutes a waiver of Mac Publishing's or
  217. its suppliers' rights under U.S. copyright laws or any other federal,
  218. state, local, or foreign law. This agreement constitutes the entire
  219. agreement between the parties with respect to the Collection and the CD and
  220. supersedes all prior or contemporaneous understandings or agreements,
  221. written or oral, regarding such matter. You are responsible for
  222. installation, management, and operation of the Collection; however, if you
  223. have questions or problems regarding the CD or the Collection, you can call
  224. 1.877.243.9863 (from the U.S. only) or email cd@macworld.com. This
  225. Agreement shall be construed, interpreted, and governed under New York law,
  226. applicable to agreements made and to be performed in such state. If any
  227. provision of this Agreement shall be held by a court of competent
  228. jurisdiction to be illegal, invalid or unenforceable, the remaining
  229. provisions shall remain in full force and effect.
